Paul Dash Mural.
A hand painted mural at Good Shepherd Studios will be positioned along a stretch of Davies lane used by many residents, school children and their families alike. We have carefully selected a local artist with a strong background in education to grace the walls of Good Shepherd Studios as it seemed highly appropriate along this School Street.
About the Artist.
Paul Dash (born 1946) is a Barbados-born artist, educator and writer who in 1957 migrated to Britain as part of the Windrush generation. He was associated with the 1960s Caribbean Artists Movement, taking part in their meetings and exhibitions.
We are honoured to have the opportunity to celebrate the work of this internationally renowned painter and long term resident of Leytonstone at Good Shepherd Studios with a hand painted mural in collaboration with world class installers Wood Street Walls.
The Artworks.
Carnival (mas)
Describing the subject matter of his paintings, Dash has said: "The key themes in my work are street festivals and carnival (mas). It is partly in these popular art forms that African diasporic communities throughout the Americas and elsewhere maintain continuity with African traditions. My identity as an artist is fixed in the fun and spectacle, and ultimately the social and political resistance of mas."
Carnival in the Bluebell Wood
Painted after visits to the locally loved parkland in Wanstead, Paul Dash’s inspiration to create the work came after his first visit there. Over a period of time he saw the petals of the intensely deep blue flowers evolve and finally give way to the play of children, which Paul Dash describes as “a very different picture and ‘feel’ to the earlier experience of the park and the backdrop for the finished work.”
